I've been wearing a cheap pair of Pumas for a long time. Before that I had airwalks. Basically I find that with decent pedals, anything that has a relatively soft sole works well staying on the pedals and is comfortable.

I just recently switched to Shimano DX shoes. They offer ankle protection and lace protection. They retail for $75. Good buy IMO
