[ Helmets & Other Protective Gear ]
I'll come right out and say it. If you aren't wearing any protective gear when you go out and ride then you are a fool. I'm sorry, I just don't give a crap how good you are, or how good you think you are. Wear your helmet every time you ride. Whether you are playing with one pallet in your backyard or dropping off 10 foot walls, it doesn't matter. You have to wear one during a competition, why is practice any different? If you are afraid of people making fun of you, then you should find a different sport. Go play some respectable american sport like basketball. Spend the money, get a good helmet, shinpads, and gloves, and wear them everytime you get on your bike. Then you'll never have to worry.
