Dropping off of an object is really
more of a mental challenge than a physical one. The movements
to get off an object are exactly the same as a typical lurch
or Japslap, but the added effect of height plays games with
your head. Like most mildly dangerous activities, it's best
to start small and work your way up. It also helps to practice
on grass, or some other surface a little more forgiving
than concrete.
I would suggest finding a pallet, setting it in your backyard,
and practicing off that for a while. Get on top and balance
for a while (I would suggest rocking, as you will be more
lined up to perform the lurch). When you are ready to go,
do one pedal stroke to the edge, then lurch off. Control
and smoothness are of the essence here. When you can do
that no problem, stack up some more, or find a low bench
or stair. Do the same movement. Eventually, you'll get to
the point where you are confident enough that even 4, 6,
or 10 foot drops don't scare you. Don't rush into anything,
and keep everything under control.
As an alternative to the pedal kick drop off, you can also
sidehop off an object, or simply ride off. Riding off an
object is probably the simplest way to do it, but is also
the move with the least amount of control (due to the typically
higher speeds).
